High Quality Curriculum Materials for Science
Having access to high-quality science curriculum materials is an important component of increasing equitable access to a rigorous education that prepares every student for college and careers.
To increase access through high-quality materials, RIGL §16.22.30-33 was passed in 2019 which requires the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education and RIDE to accomplish the following:
- Develop statewide academic standards and curriculum frameworks
- Identify at least five (5) examples of high-quality instruction materials for English Language Arts, Mathematics, & Science
- Support LEAs in the selection and implementation of instruction materials
This legislation requires that all RI Local Education Agencies (LEAs) adopt high quality curriculum materials in K-12 schools that are:
- aligned with academic standards (Next Generation Science Standards),
- aligned with the science curriculum frameworks, and
- aligned with the statewide assessment (Next Generation Science Assessment).
Furthermore, this selection must be completed by June 2026 for science.
To learn more about the timeline and process for the adoption of High Quality Curriculum Materials (HQCM) for Science, please visit the HQCM page on the RIDE website.
The current list of HQCM for science can be found in Appendix C of the guidance document, "Selecting and Implementing a High Quality Curriculum in RI."
