AP Exam Waivers

Advanced Placement examinations are taken each spring at the end of year-long courses that are designed to provide college-level curricula. Many colleges and universities grant credits and/or advanced placement based on AP scores.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Fee Waivers

Advanced Placement exam fee waivers for students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch were previously covered under a federal grant which was eliminated under the Every Student Succeeds Act. In November 2017, the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education approved a supplemental FY18 budget and FY 19 budget which included subsidizing Spring 2018 and Spring 2019 AP exams taken by qualifying students; both budgets were submitted to the Governor and then General Assembly for their review. The Governor’s supplemental FY18 budget included funds for subsidizing the Spring 2018 exam fees, but did not include funds for subsidizing the Spring 2019 AP exam fees. Schools will need to budget to cover this subsidy for qualifying students from now on.

Please see the February 2nd Field Memo (#7. RIDE to release Title IV, Part A, Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) grants) to learn more about how schools may fund programs such as Advanced Placement testing and other opportunities through federal funding under Title IV-A. Federal supplanting rules apply and may affect your ability to use Title IV-A funds for this purpose. Please consult with RIDE when determining the use of Title IV-A funds.
