Advanced Coursework Framework

The Advanced Coursework Preparation & Success Framework is designed to support Rhode Island districts and school staff to ensure that structures, conditions, and practices are in place to fully prepare and support all students with the opportunity to engage in advanced coursework during their high school experience. RIDE’s Readiness-Based Graduation Requirements, which took effect for the graduating class of 2028, establish the default expectation that all students will graduate with open doors to create their own future. For the first time, all students are expected to enroll in the full range of credits required to graduate ready for success in college and their careers. 

Advanced coursework is any course or program that is designed to provide above grade level content through a more rigorous instructional approach than other courses. This includes Advanced Placement (AP) courses, International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, and dual or concurrent enrollment courses. 

RIDE’s vision is that all students are prepared and have the opportunity to take advanced courses in high school, inclusive of honors, AP, IB, dual and concurrent enrollment, or CTE courses. We want all students to have access to advanced coursework and potentially earn college credit and credentials while still in high school. Rhode Island is currently the #1 state in growth of students taking and passing AP over the last 10 years. RIDE supports broadening participation and increasing access to AP and AP success for all students.
