School Opportunities

How the Office of School Opportunities Supports RIDE's Mission and Vision

  • We lead and support the schools and districts that operate in non-traditional spaces (such as charter schools and state-operated schools).
  • We utilize and create the policies and structures for schools in our portfolio.
  • We work collaboratively across the agency, particularly with the Commissioner on authorization work.
  • We drive the advancement of opportunities in our schools.
  • We will mindfully engrain RIDE's vision into our processes: all decisions and actions are made with the impact on students at the front of our mind.
  • We believe that zip codes, race, language, socioeconomic status, ability, housing status, or other identities should not determine educational opportunity--- this belief is central to the work of charters and non-traditional schools.

The following schools are public schools in Rhode Island that serve students as tied to a specific mission and exist by way of statute.

The Office of School Opportunities awarded grants to district-charter partnerships with the explicit purpose of creating and sustaining collaboration in the two sectors.

These projects were: 

Afterschool Programming in Central Falls 

  • Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP), Blackstone Academy, Segue Institute for Learning, The Learning Community, Central Falls Public Schools, and the City of Central Falls focused on strengthening and sharing afterschool programs across the city of Central Falls through the hiring of a shared afterschool program coordinator. 

Enrollment Landscape Analysis in Providence 

  • Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts (TAPA) and Providence Public Schools (PPSD) led the next phase of work on Unified Enrollment, including reviving stakeholder engagement and contracting a landscape analysis to inform all charters on what is needed to move toward a robust Unified Enrollment system.

Multilingual Learner Consortium and Professional Development 

  • Charette Charter, Village Green, Nowell Academy, Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College, Providence Preparatory Academy, UCAP, and PPSD hired a shared MLL Specialist to lead collaborative professional development and consortium work geared towards supporting multilingual learners.
