Accountability and Reports

To ensure that all students have the opportunities and skills they need to be successful in the classroom, in college and in the workforce, we have set high standards for our students, educators and schools.

As required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Acat (ESSA),  Rhode Island’s accountability system provides a holistic review of school performance by looking at multiple measures – like test scores, graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism.  The accountability system enables RIDE to: focus on achievement gaps, document and learn from schools that are making great progress, provide information that raises questions for further investigation, and, identify schools that need additional support and attention.

Through analyzing multiple performance measures, RIDE gives each public school a star rating from 1 to 5. These star ratings give school communities and families a clear, simple way to understand overall school performance. RIDE also calculates the performance on accountability measures for each LEA based on its overall LEA performance. While RIDE does not assign star ratings to Local Education Agencies (LEAs, also known as districts), RIDE calculates the same accountability measures for LEAs as it does for schools. All of this information is published on School and District Report Cards.

Our School and District Report Cards, as well as our annual school accountability classifications, provide the public with valuable information about whether our schools and districts are meeting goals and making progress.
