COVENTRY, RI – Today at Coventry High School, Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green was joined by Governor Dan McKee, Coventry Public Schools Superintendent Don Cowart, Coventry High School Principal Brooke Macomber, as well as students, colleagues, friends and family members, at a surprise assembly celebrating Coventry High School Mathematics Teacher Michael Cook’s selection as Rhode Island’s 2027 State Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Cook has spent the past twenty-four years helping students build confidence, perseverance, and a deep understanding of mathematics. He teaches Advanced Placement AB and BC Calculus, co-teaches Algebra I and Geometry, and serves as a member of the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) team. Beyond the classroom, he serves as advisor to the school’s math team, creating opportunities for students to collaborate, compete, and excel in advanced problem solving.

“Congratulations to Michael Cook and the entire Coventry school community on this well-deserved honor,” said Governor Dan McKee. “Michael’s passion for teaching is evident in everything he does, and he brings that enthusiasm into his classroom each day. We wish him continued success in the year ahead.”

Cook is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island (URI), where he earned dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in mathematics and education. He credits his experience as a collegiate rower at URI for shaping his mindset and teaching philosophy. He brings the discipline, resilience, and determination he developed as an athlete into his classroom each day, coaching students to stay engaged through difficult tasks and develop the problem-solving skills necessary for success.

Outside of school, Cook enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, working on home improvement projects, and biking throughout Rhode Island and New England.

“Michael Cook exemplifies the very best of Rhode Island educators. For more than two decades, he has inspired students to think critically, overcome challenges, and build confidence,” said Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “His dedication to academic excellence and student success makes him an extraordinary role model for students and educators across our state. My team and I look forward to working with Michael as Rhode Island Teacher of the Year. Congratulations!”

As the 2027 Teacher of the Year, Cook will work with the Rhode Island Department of Education throughout the 2026–2027 school year to support education statewide, including strengthening professional learning and engaging classrooms. He is also eligible to represent Rhode Island as the National Teacher of the Year.

“Michael firmly believes that students show up for teachers who show up for them, and he brings authenticity, passion, and care to every lesson,” said Sarah Dully, Rhode Island’s 2026 State Teacher of the Year.  “Whether he’s working with future mathematicians or students who struggle to connect with the subject, he makes learning meaningful and ensures every student feels valued and supported.”

“Mr. Cook is an exceptional educator who sets high expectations for his students while providing the guidance, encouragement, and support they need to succeed,” said Don Cowart, Superintendent of Coventry Public Schools.  “His unwavering commitment to student growth and achievement is evident every day, and he exemplifies the excellence and dedication of educators across Coventry.”

“Mike Cook is the kind of teacher every student deserves,” said Brooke Macomber, Principal of Coventry High School.  “He has an incredible ability to connect with students, inspire confidence, and bring out their best. He combines high expectations with patience, humor, and care. The impact he has on our students is impossible to measure. Coventry High School is proud to celebrate him as the Rhode Island State Teacher of the Year!”
