Rhode Island 2009 Teacher of the Year - Barbara Walton-Faria Barbara Walton-Faria teaches eight grade science at Thompson Middle School in Newport. At the time she was recognized as Rhode Island Teacher of the Year, she had been teaching for 17 years. Barbara used to work in the private sector for an oceanography firm, but became a teacher because of the inspiring energy and enthusiasm of one of her past science teachers. Barbara is passionate about teaching and science and is driven by the daily accomplishments of her students and her love for the life in the Narragansett Bay. Barbara was instrumental in creating and implementing an advisory program at her school to help students navigate their academic life and stay out of trouble. She also volunteers for various marine life advocacy organizations and professional development workshops across the state. Barbara earned her Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources and her Master of Arts in Education from the University of Rhode Island.
