Commissioner Infante-Green’s Statement on Recent Executive Order to Close the United States Department of Education

Published on Friday, March 21, 2025

PROVIDENCE, RI - Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green today issued the following statement on the President’s recent Executive Order to close the United States Department of Education.

At the Rhode Island Department of Education, our work has always been – and will continue to be – guided by what is best for our children. Despite changes at the federal level, this will not change here in Rhode Island, and our students and families should know that we will continue to work tirelessly to offer all children a high-quality education. While it is clear Congressional action is needed to formally close the U.S. Department of Education, the proposed changes will impede the work of the U.S. Department of Education and undermine invaluable federal expertise and support that students, teachers, and school leaders across our state and nation rely upon every day.

“Our school communities need and deserve more support during this critical time – not less. The COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on our children that has resulted in an unprecedented rise in students’ academic and social-emotional needs. In the face of these challenges, we have both a legal and moral obligation to increase support to our school communities rather than eliminating crucial programs and reversing policies that benefit children and teachers alike. Proposing short-sighted changes that elevate fear and anxiety in our schools and communities goes against our fundamental mission to serve and prepare all children for success in the classroom and beyond.

“Here in the Ocean State, we will not waver and will continue to put our children first. We will continue to advocate fiercely for the resources and support the U.S. Department of Education offers all states. No matter what the future holds for the U.S. Department of Education, RIDE, in accordance with state and federal laws, remains committed to working with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure all students can learn, grow, and thrive in supportive, inclusive learning environments.”
