RIDE's Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS)

NEW!

R.I. receives $4-million federal grant for longitudinal student-data system

The R.I. Department of Education (RIDE) is the lead partner on the initiative, working along with the Department of Labor and Training (RIDLT), the Office of Higher Education (RIOHE), and the R.I. Higher Education Assistance Authority (RIHEAA). The Providence Plan, a nonprofit corporation that provides data and analysis for government agencies and community groups, will oversee the development of the system. Information about the grant is provided below.

Project Name: The Next Frontier: Expanding Rhode Island's Statewide Longitudinal Data System to Better Support the Needs of the Postsecondary and Workforce Community

The four goals of the project are to:

  • Integrate new sources of postsecondary data (adult education, career and technical education, and Workforce Investment Act-funded workforce development) into Rhode Island’s current data system.

  • Invest in the data infrastructure and technology systems within RIOHE and RIDLT so that these agencies can more fully participate in Rhode Island’s data system.

  • Identify adult learners as a critical and priority audience in the ongoing development of data tools that are specifically designed to support student/consumer level of the data system.

  • Prioritize “users and use” of the data system by making investments in training and ongoing technical assistance for all stakeholders, especially practitioners and researchers.

About RIDE's 2009 Statewide Longitudinal Data System Grant

In 2009, RIDE was awarded a 4.67 million dollar federal grant to build and enhance the state's longitudinal data systems. What this means is that our state has been given the opportunity to connect our information systems from pre-kindergarten through higher education and the into workforce. By following our students through the education pipeline, we can answer many important questions about schools, programs and the impact they have on the students of Rhode Island.  This initiative involves the entire state - from the school house to the state house.
